Position Title: Staff Counsel
Position Description: The Office of Legal Ethics Counsel is seeking a full-time staff counsel to assist fellow Missouri lawyers by providing informal advisory opinions about lawyers’ prospective conduct under the Missouri Rules of Professional Conduct. Pursuant to Rule 5.30(c), the Legal Ethics Counsel, on behalf of the Advisory Committee, may provide informal advisory opinions interpreting Missouri Supreme Court Rules 4, 5, and 6 in response to telephone and written ethics questions from lawyers. The primary role of the staff counsel is to answer these ethics questions, and the ideal candidate must have excellent communication, writing, and research skills, as well as sound judgment, to ensure that each ethics inquiry is handled consistently and professionally. A keen interest in listening, asking questions as appropriate, researching, and problem solving is required for this position. The staff counsel position reports to the Legal Ethics Counsel and works closely with the Legal Ethics Counsel to ensure consistency and professionalism.
Other duties as assigned and as time permits may include assisting in developing ethics educational information for lawyers such as CLE programs, website resource pages, articles, or assisting the Legal Ethics Counsel with other responsibilities of this office pursuant to Rules 4, 5, and 6. This is a small office with a collegial work environment. It is part of the Missouri attorney regulatory system pursuant to Rule 5.07(b), but is not a State position.
Job Requirements: Applicant must be a Missouri lawyer in good standing with at least three years’ legal experience preferred. Excellent communication, writing, and research skills required, as well as sound judgment. Reasonable working proficiency in Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat Pro DC. The ideal candidate will be organized and able to manage time and priorities. Practice experience with the Rules of Professional Conduct, professional responsibility, or a background in legal ethics preferred, but not required. Training provided, as well as opportunities to attend relevant conferences.
Position Location: This position is located in Jefferson City and currently has the opportunity for partial remote.
Benefits & Salary Range: This position offers competitive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, paid vacation and sick leave, and retirement. Salary range is $80,000 – $88,000, commensurate with experience. This office is open Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and observes all Missouri Court holidays. This is not a position with the State of Missouri.
